While Skype might not be the best small business voip service, it does have its benefits. Relatively inexpensive to get started with skype as a voip service. It has been around for a long time. Recently acquired by Microsoft on the 10th May 2011 for $8.5 Billion. With this purchase Microsoft acquired all of the company’s technologies.
A brief history of Skype
Skype was founded in 2003 by Niklas Zennström, from Sweden, and Janus Friis, from Denmark. The Skype software was created by Estonians Ahti Heinla, Priit Kasesalu, and Jaan Tallinn. The first public beta version was released on 29 August 2003.
How Skype phone works
The Skype phone plugs into your PC or Laptop which in turn is connected to the Internet using a device such as an adsl wireless modem / router.
Using the Skype phone, calls can then be made over the Internet. This voip technology can expand the reach of a small business. By using this technology a small business can reduce expense and increase profit margins.
The once off costs are for the Skype phone, the PC or Laptop , and the adsl wireless modem / router.
The only ongoing charge is the monthly adsl internet charges which in South Africa includes the actual line rental from Telkom (no competition for fixed line). Calls to Skype users are free and only local call charges apply where the other party uses a standard (non Skype) telephone. The software for the Skype phone is downloaded off the Internet free of charge from Skype’s website.
